The Story

What it's about

“The moon never made a sound when it silvered up the river.”

“Borrowed Light” came from thinking about how often we confuse being noticed with being significant. We’re surrounded by reasons to be louder, prove ourselves, compare our lives and make sure the world knows what we’ve accomplished. Nature seems to work differently.

Roots grow without applause. Dandelions break through concrete without announcing their strength. Rivers find the ocean without needing to prove they’re going somewhere. And the moon can light an entire river with light that was never its own.

That’s where the idea of borrowed light really took shape for me. Not everything meaningful has to originate with us to be carried well. We’re shaped by the people who love us, the things we’ve learned, the kindness we’ve received and the light others have given us along the way. There’s humility in recognizing that without making ourselves smaller.

The song is ultimately about quiet confidence, living with purpose without needing recognition for it. The brightest things I’ve known rarely spend much time convincing anyone they glow.

They just keep glowing, and sometimes that’s enough to show someone else the road.

Full lyrics

[Verse 1] Some folks chase thunder Wear it like a crown Kick up enough dust To make a small town look down Talk big as a billboard Paint their names across the sky But every painted sunset Gets washed away by night Meanwhile the cottonwoods Are busy underground Trading quiet conversations No one else hears now Roots don't need applause To know which way is down [Chorus] And the moon never made a sound When it silvered up the river Never asked the water To remember its reflection Funny thing about borrowed light The stars don't seem to mind They just keep burning On the other side of time On the other side of time [Verse 2] I've seen scarecrows dressed like kings Guarding fields they didn't sow I've seen fences win arguments Then lose everything they hold I've seen dandelions split concrete Without a single word And orchards built by patient hands Outlive the loudest birds [Chorus] And the moon never made a sound When it silvered up the river Never asked the water To remember its reflection Funny thing about borrowed light The stars don't seem to mind They just keep burning On the other side of time On the other side of time [Bridge] Maybe the wind knows something The way it moves through every tree Touching all of them differently Yet leaving none of them behind Maybe that's why rivers reach the ocean Without ever having to prove They're headed somewhere [Final Chorus] And the moon never made a sound When it silvered up the river Never counted all the faces Looking upward from below Funny thing about borrowed light The brightest things I've known Never spent much time convincing anyone they glowed They just kept glowing And showed the rest of us the road
