What it's about
“Born in Hawai'i, raised by the ocean.”
“Gunnar & Jeremy” was inspired by a kid growing up in Hawaiʻi with the kind of freedom that’s becoming harder to find. Bare feet, skateboards, muddy streams, ocean days and an imagination that can turn almost anything into an adventure.
Jeremy is the lone dreadlock that appeared in Gunnar’s long blonde hair and eventually earned a name of its own, which became the playful thread running through the song.
Underneath the humor, though, this song is about individuality. Gunnar has always seemed comfortable moving at his own rhythm, without much concern for fitting into someone else’s version of who he should be. There’s also the innocence of a first crush quietly woven through it.
More than anything, it captures a season of childhood I never want to forget, wild, simple, curious and free, when the world still feels wide open and a good day doesn’t require much at all.
