The Story

What it's about

“Just the afternoon, and whatever it wanted from me.”

“Paper Wings” came from thinking about the wonder we carry so naturally as children, and how quietly we can lose touch with it as life fills with responsibilities, expectations and places we need to be.

As a child, something as simple as a paper airplane can make the world feel enormous. We notice the small things because we’re actually there for them.

“Paper wings still catch the wind every now and then” is about those moments when life slows down enough for us to return to that place. When we stop thinking about what’s next and become completely present with what’s right in front of us.

The song isn’t about going backward or escaping adulthood. It’s about remembering that the childlike wonder is still there. Sometimes all it takes is slowing down enough to feel the wind again.

Full lyrics

[Verse 1] Back when the clouds moved slower Or maybe it was me Every road bent toward a story Just beyond the trees I could spend an hour Following an ant Like it knew something Nobody else did [Verse 2] The creek ran through the summer Like a silver thread Pulling little kingdoms Through the tall grass overhead And every broken fence post Marked a different shore The world kept getting bigger Every time I wandered more [Chorus] Paper wings In the back of my mind Catching every breeze That drifted by Nothing to prove Nowhere to be Just the afternoon And whatever it wanted from me [Verse 3] A feather on the sidewalk Could stop me in my tracks Like a message from somewhere I hadn't been yet The shadows stretched for miles Across a vacant lot And every patch of sunlight Felt like an X on a map [Chorus] Paper wings In the back of my mind Catching every breeze That drifted by Nothing to prove Nowhere to be Just the afternoon And whatever it wanted from me [Bridge] Maybe wonder isn't something That gets left behind Maybe it just waits For quieter eyes [Final Chorus] Paper wings Still catch the wind Every now and then I remember them Nothing to prove Nowhere to be Just the afternoon And whatever it wanted from me Whatever it wanted from me
